Where We've Been
It's amazing what you remember on accident, some times. Take for instance, yesterday afternoon. I was cleaning out the boxes we'd placed all of our desk belongings into in the great office shuffle of 2010 and early 2011. We are collectors in more ways than one, the both of us, so that makes our stash of random things rather interesting.
In a set of nondescript folders were about a million and one little receipts, brochures, and paper itineraries form about half of the trips we've ever taken together. When you spend as much time as I do planning journeys, I guess the proof - or at least the work that went into it all - seemed valuable enough to keep at the time. I decided to keep only those guide magazines from places we have dreamed of visiting again, and pitched the rest. At this point in the game, I think I've proved my resourcefulness to the extent that an old car rental confirmation print-out isn't really something I'll need one day.
But all of that rifling got me thinking.
We've been a lot of places, together.
And if there's one thing we've kept going since well before our days of sharing a last name, it's our love of travel. It's our love of taking in pieces of a place we've never been, or rediscovering the things that are so wonderful about places we've been before.
I thought it might be fun to lay it all out here. Disclaimer: there are a few trips in between these which involve visiting family (in VA, MD, NC, NY and even here in TN) and are not cited - and a few of these actually include those, particularly where we made efforts to sightsee in our own hometowns for the sake of the other.

Gosh, that's incredible. I mean, I know it because we did it - but sometimes I forget. And I'm sure there's something in there I'm forgetting, as it is. But I love seeing even seeing just this and knowing that there's a lifetime of journeys ahead for us!

Two Feet in the Water
This photography thing I've been doing is officially crossing over the fence it's been straddling for the last couple of months. One foot in the boat, one foot in the water. Otherwise known as deciding whether I really had the gumption, the trust, and the belief that a hobby and a passion can truly be a business. Now it's two feet in the water. And you get to be here for the start of this journey (and have been for awhile now).
It's a tricky thing to think about, especially in the midst of my role and responsibilities at Belmont. But the more I've thought about it, the more I can't help but see how the Lord has been and will continue to be equipping me through a kind of two-fold approach to pursuing what I love. Relationships, organization, administration, and planning. Relationships, art, beauty, and lasting moments. Really laying down on the pedals of a photography business will not, in any way, hinder my current work and that's the most exciting thing about it.
So anyways, there's a lot to think and to pray and to dream about, hence the kind of loftiness of my thoughts these days. There's some things in the works and while those plans are laid, I need to beef up what I want my photography business to be about. Cliff and I have been dusting off the marketing files in our brains, trying to remember all the great lessons we learned while we were in college. One of the biggest things we've been throwing around is whether to keep the current name I've been imprinting on my work or to dream up something different. I've done research on both sides of the equation and am just... not sure.
I've posted a poll up on my photog blog and was wondering if you might humor me and mosey on over there and give your input. I've got a ton of ideas but I keep coming back to my own name and I don't know if that's a blessing or a curse. The thing is, too, that I'll need to work on building a website this year and securing a domain name is kind of up there on the list, and a name is kind of important for that. So, help? Please?

I've Been Tagged

This picture of me was taken on Saturday, December 16, 2006. I was in Park City, Utah on a trip with Cliff to ski and visit with his best friend and resident Park City Resort snow-maker, Aaron. As a novice skier (it was my first time EVER), I was blown away by everything. The cold, the heights, the exhilaration, the terror, the joy... like I said, everything. I love this picture for those reasons. Not a winter goes by that I don't wish for another four days like the ones we spent there.

Post-Thanksgiving Reflections
What a great day! Seriously...
I spent all of yesterday morning shooting pictures of our adorable niece and nephews, Neeley, Luke, and Parker, as well as their parents, Brad and Wendy, out at their farm. Cliff was a great assistant, and I'm really excited with a lot of the shots. If I had our computer, I'd probably have something to show for it, but you'll just have to wait until next week to see these beauties.
Later, we had an early Thanksgiving meal out at the cabin with all of Cliff's parents, aunts and uncles, cousins, siblings, and nieces and nephews. You can imagine in a fairly small hard-wooded cabin, it was a pretty loud and raucous time. I did manage to take a nap and get some time to talk with my family, though, so it couldn't have been that bad. We made a last-minute decision to stay out at the lake last night and kept Neeley, Luke, and Parker there with us. We managed to tweak the bunny ears enough to catch "The Incredibles" on the TV and watched lots of the boys (my husband included) playing "Halo" on the XBOX 360.
It was a beautiful morning out at the lake, today, so we attempted to stay there as long as possible. Which basically means until we got so hungry or so tired of wearing the same clothes from the day before, that we just gave up. Unfortunately, most of the food stores from the summer have been depleted and everyone took leftovers home, so all we had this morning was a loaf of bread and maybe 3 cups worth of milk. I managed to improvise and whipped up some cinnamon toast, which was mighty tasty if I do say so myself.
Since we left just before lunch, we drove the kids back out to the farm and we just can't really seem to find the motivation to leave. It's just wonderful out here, and having no plans and no responsibilities and nowhere to be is just nice - if even for today.
I'm thankful for that, among many things!

Holiday Week!
For me, at least.
Every time Monday rolls around, I am reminded yet again that my weekends are never full of the same sense of relief and refuge as others'. My days blend together, only I get to spend much more time with the hubs on two (this week three!) of the days. I like those ones the best. Though, I also very much enjoy the days when friends move back to town, find themselves also "between opportunities" or just off for the day, and accompany you to places like the pool, the park, or out to lunch. Those are good days, too.
To fill up the other days, I have been working on a few projects, recently.
1. Cleaning out/off our desk to make way for our new lovechild.
2. Cutting out recipes from stacks of cooking mags to make my own recipe binder.
3. Playing with our new toy. As in, our new AMAZING camera.
I've made a new Flickr account for the not-so-ordinary photos I (and maybe Cliff) may take. I put a link up here (obvioiusly) and under "Take a look..." There's a few shots I am particularly proud of and so is Cliff! He's incredibly supportive of my recent obsession with taking pictures of him (and everything else in sight) and often encourages me to take shots I might otherwise miss out on.
Let's see, what else is new? We've made it to three of the four weddings we had planned on attending so far this wedding season. There are still two yet to come, and we are very much looking forward to those.
Speaking of looking forward, we'll be out on our first day "at sea" on the cruise three weeks from today. Ah... can't wait!

Just Sounding Off
I kind of feel like I woke up in an alternate universe, today. I really can't explain it. Everything just feels a bit off. I'm kind of hoping that might fade with the morning...
Anyways. This weekend was nice - hot - but nice. Flugtag, Hot Diggity Dogs, and watching the Gonas boys on Saturday. Church, Pre-Marital Counseling (last session!), and Bridal Portrait yesterday. I turned two hundred and seventy-seven months yesterday (haha); isn't it funny how parents of young children (often infants/toddlers) answer their childrens' ages in months and not year estimations. Like Jake - he's not just "a little over a year" - he just turned fourteen months last Tuesday. And, I digress (okay, so maybe things aren't that off.)
Points of Information:
-I'm now on the third book of Emily Giffin's
-today is the first of five days left that I have of nannying
-we're going to get our marriage license this week
-I'm having all of my bridesmaids, save Cearra (who comes in Friday!) over tonight for a fitting and dinner (looks like the menu changed and we'll be doing ravioli instead of lasagna, ladies)
-I discovered two new food sites, which make me particularly happy
(Those are all things I did not feel like writing in paragraph form, especially as they have little relation to each other.)
As for my bridal portrait shoot yesterday, I can't rave enough about it. I had a blast and was so well taken care of by people who aren't just professionals but (THANK THE LORD) are also wonderful friends. After counseling, I got in my car and headed over to The Factory to Iz's day spa. Because I had planned on her doing my hair and make-up, she offered to let us use the spa for some of the studio shots. So essentially, we did most everything there with me all dolled up and music playing in the background. Zach and Jody brought bottles of water, cheese, grapes, crackers - it was awesome. I had been really nervous about the whole day in general - not that my expectations were low of the work that they all would do, but really how I was going to look, feel, etc. Well, I felt incredible and we had a great time. After a couple of settings inside the spa, we took a few shots at one of the entrances to The Factory, and then drove over (yes, I drove my car in my wedding dress) to the Riverview residence. Riverview is this old historic house (that people live in and run stables out of) with magnolia trees and stone walls and iron gates and it just has that really rustic, old-southern feel that I was hoping for for some outside pictures. It was great.
I ended the day by riding down 65 in my wedding dress, laughing that I had been so, I don't know, worried about the day. It was great, and a nice bit of practice for the big Big Day which is now in (not believing my eyes - I actually had to rub them) 26 days.

Three Awesome Things Can Make a Day
First, both of my bosses are out of the office today and all of the work I need to do can be done from home, or from wherever I sit with my laptop. Thus, I do not need to go into the office today, either. Awesome thing #1.
Second, I celebrated one of my best friend's birthdays last week with a handful of great friends at Dan McGuinness for some awesome $5 fish n' chips and a poor man's black velvet. This picture is a happy reminder of that wonderful evening:
