Contest Clues (Cont'd)
1. This location is one of the few temperate rainforests in the world, and is also one of the largest. Moss is abundant (obviously).
2. This man:
has three cities named after him in the same region and was the first European to see this mountain. As was his habit, he named it after a friend.
3. You might say this landmark was in labor for 9 hours.
5. Three decades ago, this place had more glaciers than any place in the US outside of Canada. Brrrrrrr.
6. A popular place for Free Willy, Shamu, and their friends.

It's Booked! ...and a CONTEST.
Wanna know where we're going?
...
...
Well, you have to guess!
Only thing is, it's more than just one place...

So what do you do, now?
- Name the state and specific locations from the image (CLUE ONE) above.
- Send me an e-mail with your answers.
(No really, I'm serious! It's rather well-suited to the theme of the trip, I should add...)
This will be the first of daily clues I'll offer through Tuesday. So if at any point, you've already submitted your answers and you change your mind, just guess again! And as you will notice, I've disabled comments so as to give a fair advantage to everyone participating (to trust their answers aren't being copied.)
Have at it, friends!

The Moment You've All Been Waiting For (Part Two)
- An even earlier start to the day because it was Easter, and we had a trip ahead of us out to El Cajon for a wonderful service at Shadow Mountain Community Church where David Jeremiah is the pastor (whose name and face I recognized from years of working at a Christan bookstore).
- After church, we spent some time just resting and walking around Balboa Park, touring the gardens, drinking coffee in a courtyard cafe, stopping over and over again to take pictures of the beautiful fountains, flowers, and architecture.
- From Balboa we drove out to Pacific Beach again and stopped a seeming hole-in-the-wall which turned out to be the world's largest Hawaiian BBQ chain called L&L. Oh My Gosh. If you've never had Hawaiian BBQ, try it sometime in your lifetime. It's soooooo good.
- Next stop: Point Loma where we visited the Cabrillo National Monument (don't think we didn't bring our NPS Passports), the lighthouse, and the tide pools. Fortunately on our way from Point Loma to Old Town we crossed paths with a 7-11 which more than made my day.
- Our goal for the day was to catch the sunset after doing some hiking in Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. And that we did. And we got a whole lot more than a sunset and a good hike, too. Despite not seeing a whale on our boat tour, we got our bang for our buck at Torrey Pines and not only saw a whale fluke slapping out in the ocean but also caught wind of (literally) and saw a whale that had died and come ashore.
- Dinner at Miguel's Cocina in Coronado (where Cliff and I split their delicious lobster and shrimp fajitas) and dessert at Mootime (yes, again).
Day Four
- Woke up sad, of course, but ready to fill up our last full day in California with as much good as possible, which began with a visit to Seaport Village and brunch at Don Pancho's Taco Shop in Imperial Beach. A brunch of California Burritos (steak, cheese, sour cream, and FRENCH FRIES) at a stand-up taco shop just miles above the border. First times for everything, right? Well, it was gooooood.
- And the rest of the day? We lounged on the beaches of Coronado at both Silver Strand State Beach and the Hotel Del (with a sad goodbye with Aaron and a stop for just a little bit more ice cream from Mootime in between each... color us addicted) soaking up every last drop of sunshine that we could and enjoying a moment, just the two of us, together.
- Soon after that, we were heading back up to the Orange County area (and stopping for a "last meal" at In-n-Out on the way) to catch our flight home which took us on a roundabout way back with a layover in Las Vegas. So cool to see from the sky (seeing as I've never been before)!
Definitely a memorable trip, and thanks for bearing with me as I've recounted (almost) every detail. Ha. The travel agent and resident tripadvisor.com poster in me just couldn't help but share.

The Moment You've All Been Waiting For (Part One)
Needless to say, our vacation was incredible. I could tell you that much and just leave it at that. But I won't, because as we speak pictures are uploading to Flickr and I'm sitting with my journal open where I chronicled our 4.2 full days in California. A much-welcomed and needed get-away of sorts. And celebration of sorts, too, seeing as California is the first place Cliff and I ever travelled together apart from going home to visit each others' families.
We've just barely been able to get back into the pace of things here, so this quiet Saturday morning is my only time and space in which to even begin to recount. So I'll just leave it to a retyping of my bulleted outline of sorts from my journal to tell.
Day .2
- Flight out of Nashville to Santa Ana/Irvine/Costa Mesa/Orange County was pretty eventful; we were privy to bare witness to a giant thunderstorm rolling through parts of the eastern Midwest as well as saw, from the sky, those giant wildfires in Oklahoma.
- Got into the airport 12:50AM our time, rented a ruby red Toyota Camry (whom we subsequently named Ruby), and headed to the Wyndham Orange County where we rested peacefully through the night.
- Hit the Pacific Coast Highway through Newport and Laguna Beaches to Dana Point where we had delicious breakfast bagels and fresh juice blends at coffee shop by the harbor and caught a whale watching tour with Dana Wharf.
- No whales sighted, however LOTS of dolphins and sea lions which I couldn't really complain about. The first of the dolphins we spotted were the Pacific White-sided which, you should know, I once adopted through the World Wildlife Fund when I was 10 or so, thanks to my grandparents. I cried as soon as I saw them. Come to find out, they are rarely seen on these trips and when they are, they never come near the boat. Lucky us!
- On our drive down to San Diego, we made another pitstop at La Jolla Cove to see the seals and the what is supposedly one of the most beautiful views of the Pacific. I'd definitely say it ranks up there on my top.
- Off to the Sheraton Suites in downtown San Diego we went with our tummies full of that great tasting fresh wonder that is a burger and fries from In-n-Out Burger which we found on our way in Pacific Beach thanks to Jody's great detective work on the phone realtime with me, all the way back in Tennessee.
- We settled into our suite on the 18th floor with a pretty nice view and not too much later, we had a knock on our door. AARON WAS THERE! We sat and caught up just a bit, brainstorming on our plans for the evening, and finally settled on a walk down to the Gaslamp Quarter for dinner and drinks at Fred's Mexican Cafe and live music at The Field.
- Early morning start so we can head out to Coronado Island for breakfast at Clayton's Coffee Shop (where I had the most wonderful eggs over easy on homemade hash), a tour of the Naval Bases (particularly the Naval Special Warfare Center where the SEALs train and where you aren't supposed to take pictures, so I've linked to some other guy's - who broke the rules - stuff), and a visit to the Hotel del Coronado (a gem of a resort).
- Then back to mainland we went for lunch at Rubio's (the original home of the Fish Taco... which is delicious I should mention) before heading to...
- THE ZOO! Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Personal faves = the gorillas, pandas, and orangutans. I can see why this is always mentioned as one of the best zoos in the country, and whether you like 'em or hate 'em, there's really great conservation and breeding efforts going on there.
- Our night ended with a seafood dinner at Nick's at the Beach in Pacific Beach and a stop at the Mootime Creamery back on Coronado for some fantastic ice cream. They've created their own fantastic version of B&J's infamous (and now graveyard residing) Brownie Batter ice cream. Needless to say, this was the first of three visits at Mootime.
Part Two to follow sometime soon...

Friday Link Love
- This makes me want to read Atlas Shrugged all over again. I think I just might.
- I can't get over this video post that Zach Arias guest-blogged for Scott Kelby the other day. Incredible. Worth every minute of watching, even if you're not into photography.
- I have requested that we build one of these in our backyard one day. Cliff agreed!
- Nerdy, but totally cool.
- This site and its subjects blow my mind. (And make me feel not so weird anymore for my preferences for certain food-pairings.)
- One of the many reasons I appreciate Donald Miller.
- And what is a little link love without a delicious recipe?

Honest Scrap
Big day, guys... Brooke honored me with the Honest Scrap award! These things are always fun, so hopefully you'll bear with me in accepting it.
It appears the rules of the award are to:
1) Choose a minimum of 7 blogs that you find brilliant in content or design.
2) Show the 7 winners' names and links on your blog, and leave a comment informing them that they were prized with "Honest Scrap." And while there's not really a physical prize, you do get to keep and post the nifty icon.
3) Finally, list at least 10 honest things about yourself.
So here are my 10 things:
1) My favorite way to drink soda is from the fountain. Even better when the ice is small and crunchy and the cup is (GASP!) plain white Styrofoam. There's just something about the combination that makes me want to slurp on it all day long, especially when it's half-Coke (or Cherry Coke, if I'm lucky) / half-diet Coke.
2) I don't keep in touch with anyone from the high school, middle schools, or elementary schools I went to when I was younger, not at least in the way that you would if you were actually friends. Sure, we're "friends" on facebook, but that doesn't account for a whole lot. We're not the kind to call each other up, visit when I'm in town, or anything of the sort. Sometimes I feel odd because of that and then other times, it's a mixed-blessing. My family are the only people who have truly known me for the longest...
3) For the longest time, I could not eat Italian sausage without gagging. I was never sure if the horrible episode as a kid with the babysitter was what caused it or brought it to my attention, but it was, to me, the most deplorable and repulsive food in the world. Later in life, I determined it was the seeds that did me in and my first forays into the world of enjoying Italian sausage were thanks to the seedless kind. Now, I can even stand to eat the seeds... occasionally.
4) Speaking of almost vomiting, I have the worst gag reflexes. I need nothing to back this up. Just watch me my brush my teeth in the morning and you'll have your proof.
5) I am of the very, very sentimental collector-sort. If I have ever had a significant experience at any point in my life, I usually have some sort of object that ties into it. Even something as goofy as a gum wrapper Cliff shaped into a boat on the night he first said "I love you" or as sweet as a wildflower pressed into the pages of a particularly life-changing book I may have read in the middle of a giant field on a beautiful summer day.
6) I waited until I was married to share myself completely with another person. I think that may have been, of all the good decisions I've been able to make in the last (almost) twenty-five years and aside from choosing to follow Christ, the one that I am most proud of and thankful for.
7) On the list of people I was once convinced I would one day marry, most are currently starving musicians. Only one is probably not starving, and his name is Mat Kearney. And I don't know why I was particularly convinced we'd get married, except for that one time he brushed my hair behind my ear after a mutual friend of ours' chopped off my locks on her front porch during Monday Night Football. Or maybe it was that time he dropped his pic while playing at church and I was the one to catch it and hand it back? Oh, what a silly little girl I was!
8) I was born a bookworm. Okay, okay, maybe not exactly. In fact, I don't even know at what age I began reading (Mom, can you help with that?); but what I do know is that I have always loved it with a severity unrivaled to many other things in my life. It is the one past time I have been completely committed to my entire readable years. I was the kid reading undetected by the nightlight when it was bedtime and when the nightlight was no longer needed, I was under the covers with a flashlight. To this day, I always have a book on the nightstand (okay, okay, right now it's a nightstool).
9) Strangely enough, the two times in my life when I have felt most beautiful are: when I wore a long, beaded, lace, strapless, empire-waisted wedding gown with silver, strappy heels, my hair in a chiffon with elegant vintagey pearl and silver hair combs and earrings to match, and expertly applied make-up on my wedding-day... and when I wore a pair of pants I'd had on for two days, an old pullover and a jacket, gloves, a skull-cap, no make-up on an unclean face, and hiking boots on the cold morning Cliff and I stood and watched the sunrise over the Teton Range.
10) I am finally okay with misspellings and mispronunciations of my name. When you are a Kristine, your life is destined for trouble. Now don't hear me wrong, I love my name. And I think it was a genius way to spell it and not only that, but a name that suits me very well. However, for whatever reason, the K throws everyone off. It's like Christine makes so much sense to people that Kristine just can't... not even phonetically. I've had a lifetime of Kristin, Kristina, Kristy, but Kristine? Whoever thought it could be that difficult? Throw in a maiden name (Lang) that "usually" has an e at the end of it and you can imagine what my pre-married life was like. Constant correction, taking offense, etc. But here's the thing, once I adopted some other family's (now mine, of course) pronunciation and spelling woes, I learned a sort of sympathy for myself that finally made it all okay. Now I get to help people learn to spell a last name I've only had for a year and a half (that evidently has "too many" e's, when it should only have two) and I just deal with it. So yeah, so what if I'm "Kristine Neeley with a K and three e's"... at least my middle name is only occasionally up for argument (because in this case, z is way more normal than s).
By the way, if you want to know more useless honesty about me, you can always hearken back to this old post.
And who shall my nominations go to for the Honest Scrap award? Well, considering the plethora of blogs I could link to my added qualifications are that the persons selected be fairly frequent bloggers (enough that I'd believe you'd actually do this) and an honest blogger, at that.
So here goes (in alphabetical order):
Amanda @ Amanda's Autoblogography
Erin @ My So-Called Life
Grace @ Grace Notes
Heather @ highly caffeineated
Jennfer @ The Henry Family in Nashvegas!
Jody @ Gray Photography
Karyn @ Johnson's Journal

I've Been Tagged

And now I get to tag six people. Jody, Brooke, Sarah, Whitney, Sara, and Hthr, have fun (that is, if you decide to play)! For the record, when we have exactly thirty friend-blogs, picking just six is not an easy task... I want to tag all of you!

The New Years Surprise
Wednesday morning, we hit the interstate with me having no clue as to what direction we'd be heading. A turn onto 65N, then 440E, and finally 40E left me guessing only a couple of places, none of which were correct. Almost the entirety of "Call of the Wild" by Jack London on CD later, we ended up in a tiny little town called Wartburg, TN, which happens to be close-to-home The Obed... otherwise known as the Obed Wild and Scenic River. B-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l. Cliff had been to another part of the river once before to do some climbing with Aaron, but this time around he took me to a proper campground (the only one by the river) where we grabbed this great little campsite overlooking the rapids and the pedestrian bridge from the day use area. Getting this spot was easy because until about 6PM, when a true mountain man rolled up with his old pick-up truck and tarp tent (yes, I half considered our safety for like 5 minutes), we were the only people there. Cliff started a fire that lasted us well into the evening, over which we talked about our favorite memories and biggest challenges from the year. We dined lavishly on "cups of noodles" and roasted marshmallows, while drinking hot chocolate under a night sky full of stars. Even with temperatures near the high teens (which sure pushed our 15 degree sleeping bags to their limit), it was a perfect night and there's nothing like falling asleep and waking up to the sound of a rushing river by your bed. For certain. And that was our New Year's Eve. The quietest and least "festive" but probably one of my favorites so far.
Thursday morning we took our time getting and packing up. Cliff fixed another fire while I tidied up our gear and prepared our first meal of 2009. Hot chocolate and homemade instant oats. Mmm, mmm. Just enough to fuel us for a short jaunt along the trail that led from our campsite, along the river, and up onto a bluff with some pretty cool climbing spots. Definitely a place we'd want to come back to, is what we decided. Only next time, with kayaks and climbing gear in tow. Soon enough, we were back to camp, all loaded up, and we hit the road (not without a lunch break at gool ol' CB) for our next surprise location. Which turned out to be Chickamauga Battlefield in Georgia. Now, if you are at all surprised by this... you probably don't know us as well as you thought. Because we have been to more Civil War battlefields together than either of us can probably remember, and we've got the National Parks Passport cancellations to prove it. And Chickamauga is now probably my second favorite of them all (I really, really like Fredricksburg). The thing about Chickamauga is that it's got this really simple driving tour, a ton of monuments and plaques to read, and is the kind of place that's easy to enjoy no matter what your interest level is in the civil war, because the scenery is gorgeous and there's a ton of paths for hiking and biking. We're definitely looking to go back, because the driving tour was just a snapshot of all Chickamauga has to offer.
After Chickamauga we head back north towards downtown Chattanooga, which left me absolutely bewildered as Cliff hands me a mapquest printout and tells me to read him directions. I can't make out our destination from the address, and before I know it he's pulled into the roundabout in front of the downtown Doubletree Hotel. "SWEET!" I thought. Delicious chocolate chip cookies and a night's stay at a hotel in a wonderful city? He sure knows the way to my heart. Our room was great! But I mean, put a plush king-sized bed I don't have to make in any room and I'll fawn and fuss over it. We, after not showering in the previous 24 hours, cleaned up and then headed out from the hotel on a short walk to one of my favorite restaurants for dinner. Another great evening, it goes without saying...

Brief Tidings
Yesterday was: busy, busy busy. We got our to-do's done, though, and for that I am thankful.
The Lampo Christmas Party was: incredible. Thanks to everyone who is a part of that company and made last night what it was. All of you who work so hard and are rightfully presented with some pretty amazing food/service/accolades/gifts at the end of the year. What a blessing this company has been to us!
Our drive ahead is: long, long, long. But worth it, for sure. We'll pull into Mom's driveway tonight and the twelve hours may (or may not) feel like a blink. But we're up early and ready to go, let our Tour de Mid-Atlantic, begin!
Next time you hear from me, we'll be in Virginia... and as of now, we're on vacation!

Genius
And guess what she just gave me for Christmas. Well, I hate to break it to you but you'd never guess. This gift is just too genius for anyone to dream up (though, someone did) and genius enough that I'm just... amazed.
Check it out:

How cool is that?!
In case it doesn't make sense, it's all of the keyboard shortcuts on a mac for operating Photoshop. Translated: This will make my life so much better. So much more lovely. So much... sigh... easier.
Thanks, Moll!

Thanksgiving with the Finchers
Our lovely hosts:

...dreamed big and decided on Turkey Manicotti for the entree. (Come to find out, cannelloni and manicotti are kind of but not really the same thing. Here's what ever-reliable wiki has to say about the matter.)
From there, the rest of the menu was decided in a series of reply-all e-mails and was as follows:
Crostini w/ Olive Spread [Finchers]
Turkey Manicotti [Finchers]
Greens w/ Strawberries, Red Onions, Pecans, and Cranberries [Finchers]
Country Green Beans [Neeleys - I used the recipe I linked on last week's FLL!]
Peppery Parmesan Mashed Potatoes [Finchers]
Pumpkin Cannoli Tarts [Finchers]
Pumpkin Pie [Neeleys]
(I think we got off too easy, this year...)
Not only is is great to have good friends, but good friends who can cook, who love to have fun, and with whom we've been able to share some great moments with over the last few years. And there was a new Fincher to celebrate with us, this year! And of course, what is Thanksgiving without playing card games and watching football?! OH, and playing BLOCKUS!!!!!!
We've already started brainstorming for next year's menu...

Suh-Weet
"What?" you ask.
I'll let you figure it out.
I want you to work for the answer.
Not too much hunting and pecking, required, really.
Except, possibly for you subscribers who will have to visit the blog to see.
And those, my friends, are the most clues I'll give you.
Because scavenger hunts are fun.
No really, they're a blast.
And you're smart.
Have fun!
p.s. I love symmetry.

You Might Say...
Well, I can't tell you and I may not ever tell you. But if things work out the way this path starts leading, then I may have something to tell you. Or I may not. Who knows?
Enigmatic, enough?
I think it's the sopapillas. Or the five pages of stuff I've been scrambling to write in the last couple of hours. And no, I'm not publishing anything, so don't even ask or I might start crying. Let's just say for the night, I've almost had my fill of the words "higher learning", "philosophies", "student development", and "seek". But not of sopapillas, I could go for another. You'd think I was in grad school again. Of course, because of the words, not the sopapillas.
Anyways, we went to Trivia Night with The Mays and wouldn't you know, WE WON!!! A $20 gift certificate for our next visit to Nacho's which we will, of course, use for our next night of May-Neeley trivia. So, that was awesome. It helps that Vaughn's got a Ph.D. and that backed by Whit, Cliff, and I, we had a lot of brains on the table. Now that would have been gross.
Okay, I think that's enough. See, I told you Cliff should start posting...
Back to being an enigma.

A Tennessee Homecoming
We should be in bed, by now, considering we'll be up so early. But, oh well. What are you gonna do? Sometimes it's just too fun to linger over dinner and then chat like you have all the time in the world. We're headed to Knoxville, tomorrow! Sure, sure, the Vols aren't so hot this year, but we're no fair-weather fans and when your (as in Cliff's) boss's boss's boss, otherwise known as the vice president, graciously offers you four of his (really good) tickets and his parking garage pass, you happily accept! We invited one of Cliff's co-workers and her husband who used to work with the team back when he was an undergrad at UT. So... out of the four of us, Nick's the only one who actually, rightfully belongs at this Homecoming game, tomorrow. But whatever. They're playing Wyoming (whose state is absolutely beautiful), so that'll pretty cool to see a team play that is not from the Southeastern portion of the United States.
It's our second game of the season and our seventh since we started dating, and we'll see if my track record will pull out a win for the Big Orange. Not many people can say they've never been to a losing game at Neyland - so I guess we'll find out tomorrow whether I've joined that other club or not. You know, come to think of it, our first game we ever went to together was the Homecoming game against Memphis in 2005. Memorieeees... precious memorieeees. (Might be our last time to see Fulmer coach if we don't make it to the Kentucky game over Thanksgiving weekend... weird.)
Anyways, hope ya'll have a great Saturday!
