I Believe In A Thing Called Love

If you've visited the blog recently in the last couple of weeks or so and had your speakers up, you've probably noticed the music. And if you've been particularly lucky you've gotten the random uploader to start playing "I Believe in A Thing Called Love" by The Darkness.

Each of the songs has a particular meaning for us and this one, in particular, never fails to bring a smile to both our faces. This is a song, that for whatever reason, Cliff just really latched onto. As a going-away (to Sudan) / birthday present, I bought him an iPod Nano and pre-loaded it with all of his favorite songs and photos of us over the years. When he opened it and realized I had already put songs on it, his first question was "Did you put 'I believe in a thing called' on here?!" When I nodded yes, a look of huge relief washed over his face. He'd only heard the song a few times but he just loved it; knowing it'd be going with him just meant the world.

Fast forward to nearly six months later, and Cliff is recently returned from Sudan (in one piece, healthy, and still in love with me, thank God). We're in the car on the way to Nashville for our first drive back together since he'd flown into the states just two days earlier. We plug in my iPod, set it on shuffle, and a few songs in (out of way, way too many), the beginning guitar riffs to the infamous song come on.

AND CLIFF SINGS EVERY SINGLE WORD, VOICE INFLECTION, WOOS, ETC. And I mean, he got really into it. In that moment, I was completely shocked and amused, and just looked at him quite dumbfounded.

He grinned back at me and then recounted how it was the song he listened to every night as he lay in his tukul, sweating profusely on his mosquito net-covered bed and thinking about me.

And I've thought about that moment in the car and that image of him falling asleep in Sudan thinking of me and listening to that song... every time I've heard it since.
It's a nice reminder of so many things I love about who we are.
